How I have Improved my Families Diet This Month
We have been Paleo going on three months now. Meal planning and prep have begun to get a little easier. I no longer feel as overwhelmed. I have also realized that I do not have to have major homemade meals every day. Easy homemade meals are just fine. There are also some choices that I found impossible to make a few months ago, easy to make now.
This month I have made two permeant and one hopefully permeant chance to our diet.
The first change I have made is to purchase only organic produce. I have read some opinions that free range meat is more important then organic products. While I respect that opinion it was easier for me to switch to organic produce. This month we bypassed any produce that was not labeled organic. There was not as many organic produce at Costco when we were shopping so I was a little worried. We can not live off just carrots. I supplemented by buying a few more frozen organic produce. We also purchased the organic sliced apples instead of the whole apples. This was a great find. Turns out L loves them and they will not turn brown in her lunch bag - score. One more lunch food added for her.
I even bypassed the double bag of raisins at Costco (L's big preferred food at the moment) and will pick up their organic counterparts at Ralph's (Kroger's) on our next trip there.
The next big step is I finally broke down and got the organic cage free vegetarian fed eggs. We were buying them here and there - but I could not bring myself to get them in mass quantity at Costco for about double the price. Then I started to notice a difference between the eggs. The whites of the non organic eggs are thicker and harder to mix then the better eggs. To me that was a sign that there is a difference and I needed to adjust my thinking. So I did. J loves that the eggs we have currently have brown shells.
I am proud of these permeant changes to our diet. I have a list of other stuff we need to do to improve. Yet, I have to step back and realize that I just made two huge leaps this month and I can work on the rest in time.
However, I did do even one more great thing this month. My local Costco had organic beef. No, it is not free range - but they have not even had organic again. So in the same trip I had to adjust my thinking for eggs I upped my budget for meat and got the organic stuff. I am hoping this is a permeant change - meaning that Costco keeps this meat. I bought three packs of the stuff - so I have shown my support.
I did find that my local Ralph's has free range hamburger. It costs ten dollars for one pound. I can feed my kids at In N Out cheeper then it is to buy this hamburger to make at home. Not ready to make that leap yet. Still happy with the progress that I have made this month.
