International Authors' Day

Recently I found an online call to establish an International Authors' Day. There are so many causes to join - just look at the alphabet soup diagnosis in my family for a few examples - yet, I found myself in agreement that there really should be a day to celebrate writers.

Books are amazing creations. They take you away from your own reality on to a multitude of adventures. They are also the gateway into learning about anything and everything.

When I was a child you would find me at a library. I would hang out at the school library at lunch. After school I would head over to the public library. I would stay for hours until my mother or sister got of work and would pick me up. In middle school we had a library practically in our back yard. I was at the library more then our house.

When my children were first being diagnosed I had stacks of books on OCD, ADHD, ASD, Bipolar, ODD, and many other disorders. I ready about the sensory child, the explosive child, and how to parent using both love and logic. Without books I would not have started my growth as a parent to
special needs children.

Books continued to support me throughout my undergraduate education and my graduate education. Not only did I continue to learn valuable information, I also used books to distress. I journeyed to magical lands where vampires and werewolves roamed. I visited other planets, met new life forms, and inhabited worlds were people were not annoying. Every person with autism seems to inhabit their own world - mine is the world of books.

I cannot begin to imagine how many books I have read in my lifetime. I have read some amazing novels which have rightfully gone down in history. I have read some classics that leave me wondering about the taste of the world. I have read hundreds of non fiction books which have expanded my knowledge of the world. I have also enjoyed myself with a good paranormal romance, fantasy, or science fiction novel.

Before I had children books were my world. Now they are my release from the world. There is almost nothing I enjoy better then curling up with an amazing book.

None of this would be possible without the writers behind those books. It is the talent and skill of both nonfiction and fiction writers who convey meanings and build worlds for the rest of us to learn and inhabit.

    1. I agree. Some days are happier then others - but I would not trade any of it.
