My sister started her boys on protein powder about a year ago. Her kids were not eating and she wanted to help them get some nutrients. When they bought a bottle that her boys would not consume they passed it down to J.
At the time I was thrilled. He was twelve, always hungry, and this was our pre Paleo had no money to feed him stage. I think this bottle of protein powder is how he staved off the hunger.
Lately J has been on a growing roller coster. His moods are fluctuating with the hormones racing through is body. The kid is shooting up, and he is starting to have some muscle on his body. He has never had any fat on his body, so something covering up his bones is awesome.
With the growing has come the constant hunger. He packs five pound lunches. He eats his weight in fruit a day (I do not limit his intake since he eats everything else I put in front of him as well). I honestly have no idea how he can eat so much, and I am amazed that I still have food in my house after. I love having a job that actually pays me money!
During all of this J has been asking for protein powder. We have talked about how whole food is better for his body. He does not need protein powder. We have talked about the food choices he has, and what he can eat at any time, so he knows that food is not restricted.
When he started stealing food again I knew we had a problem. No child should consume an entire bag of coconut sugar in one night. It is not that he is a sugar kid, my guess is he felt hungry and out of control. It was an emotional thing.
I really understood his need when we went to the grocery store, Sprouts, and he was fixated on the various protein powders. We talked and he agreed that he would not need to take food if I got this for him.
We finally agreed to a vegetable based protein powder - Plant Fusion. It is sweetened with Stevia. Is it paleo? It is in the sense that it conforms to the food that we are eating. It is not because it is not a whole food. For J this was a reasonable compromise. I do like that the price is reasonable, especially when we turned to Amazon. It also comes in multiple flavors, Unflavored
(I may buy some of this to put in S's food), Chocolate
(tastes like light coco powder with a stevia aftertaste),
Vanilla Bean
