DIY - Homemade Chapstick or Lipstick

No, I did not have time to make this during the craziness of the last couple of days - although it is so easy that I could have if I needed to. As it is I made this a week or so ago, and have enough to last the four of us for a while - and without using a lot of ingredients.

I found the recipe for the homemade chapstick (or lipstick) here.

I did not want to reuse the lipstick containers we had at our house, because I was trying to get away from the dies, not continue on their existence. I decided to order empty containers knowing that those can then be reused (if not lost by the kids).

Thankfully they are not expensive. I also ordered the organic beeswax and shea butter, the coconut oil I already had.

I wanted to make enough for everyone to have one - so I four times the amounts. It took a bit longer to melt with the extra ingredients, but not more then about five minutes.

It also made way more then five tubes. I took the mixture without any coloring and added it to the tubes using a half teaspoon (I did not have a dropper). The mixture did not decrease very much so I ended up feeling five tubes of uncolored mixture.

Then, I mixed in some cocoa powder to get a brown color. I also added some dried beat powder from some beats we were dehydrating.

My coloring system did not turn out all that great. The color is not deep enough to be considered lipstick, just highlighted chapstick. When I am finished with this batch (I ended up feeling up all ten tubes so it will be a while) I will try the coloring again.

Even with the light color I am happy with it. It leaves my lips shinny and helps bring out their natural color. It also leaves them feeling very soft. It is nice to not have to worry about ingesting the red dye of my last lipstick - and it is so much cheaper then buying the stuff over the counter.

Of all the ingredients I bought I did not even use a 1/5th of them.
