The Beauty of Play

I admit this is an interesting picture - especially when I have titled the post about play. What does a lone shopping cart have to do with play? Why is play something I am showcasing in my week of talents?

Back right before we went Paleo we went to Chick-fil-a where my children got a road bingo game. It was a pad of paper with items to cross of when you find them. My children had very liberal interpretations of the squares. Firetrucks counted as police cars, break lights worked as a flashing light, and a sign was a sign no matter the shape or color. For a week S and L played this game together with J and myself helping to point out items that the needed.

One day while driving to school L finished her card except for a shopping cart. We were in a residential area and there was little hope of seeing one. We dropped L off at the babysitter and continued on to J and S's school when they spotted a shopping cart. They grabbed my phone, took a picture, and texted it to the babysitter so that L could finish her board.

To me this pictures signifies how much my children really do care for each other. This is an important thing to remember on the days when they will not stop fighting with each other.

It also is a reminder of how far we have come. There was a time when my children never interacted with each other. The cohabited, but did not know how to interact. In one memory of their early childhood J was working on a 1000 piece puzzle, S was jumping on a trampoline, and L was hiding in a corner hitting two blocks together. In truth, sibling rivalry is really a step up. When they are nice and interacting with each other it is golden.

What is really nice is that the girls play together about twice a week now - true interactive creative play. Granted L leads the play (sometimes I really wonder who is cognitively older) and that pretend play is still typically based off of movies - but not all the times.

So yes play is worth showcasing this week - and a shopping cart on the side of the road is pretty cool too.
