The Beauty of Music

When J was in fifth grade he joined the orchestra. They met twice a week. It was amazing how his performance improved - even his handwriting got better (meaning occasionally someone could read it). He was adamant that he wanted to play the cello - his cousin played. However, he soon found that this was not a great idea for him. He moved to the viola and fell in love. In sixth grade I wanted to put him in orchestra. Unfortunately the program that he was in did not have their elective at the same time as orchestra. I would have fought, I mean excluding special needs kids from music is a horrendous decision, except that they put him in computer class instead. Considering we were moving him to a keyboard it was important that he get basic typing skills.

In 7th grade J got to be in orchestra. The one down side is that since he missed orchestra in 6th grade he is in beginning orchestra. . . with his sister. Can you imagine the teacher that has both of my kids together! J has been pretty bored with the pace of the class. If I would have realized how remedial it is I would have pushed to see if he could get placed higher. As it is, he is where he is, and learning how to deal with being bored is a good skill also.

When S got placed in orchestra I was not sure how she would react. I was surprised when she was overjoyed by the prospect. She insisted that she is going to play the cello. Deja Vu. Except this time she loved it - and still loves it. I do think that it helps that she is taller then J was.

Tomorrow they have their first concert. J has been worried about the rules. "Mom we can not leave until everyone is finished or we don't get our grade." "Don't worry J if L starts acting out she can go out with grandma or I can take her." "No, nobody can leave." "No, you can't leave. They can't make me stay. Trust me if L starts having a fit there is no way they want her to still be in their."

S's whole world has revolved around this concert since Christmas has ended. She started counting down the very next day. I have to admit, I will be a bit excited when it is over.
