Last week was a bit crazy. Not only is it one of the busy times at my (awesome) job, it was also the kid's orchestra concert, the end of the kid's term, and general craziness. I knew that there would not be enough time to get the kids, make dinner, and make it to the concert in time. Which left using our last eating out token this month.
Yep, I allow (or as I see it limit) us to eating out only twice per month. This is a HUGE change for us - but I have been so proud that we have managed it. As of now the only place we have gone is In and Out. This time I decided that we were going to try Ruby's Dinner.
The first time that I had eaten at this restaurant was when we lived in Colorado. At the time I was not worried as to went in my children's mouths. I was worried about having food for my children to eat. See this was a rough period in their development. This was when we were asked (translate escorted to the exit) to leave the grocery store because S's temper tantrums were that bad. I would have J in the back of the shopping cart with toys (I wish we had iPads back then), S in the front of the cart so I could try and catch her before the rage hit, then L was strapped to my chest in her sling. I would race into the store, throw stuff in a cart, and race to the checkout. I ended up with some of the weirdest food ever, but I was too happy to have actual food in our house.
Ruby's was one of our saver havens. The atmosphere was inviting, J and L loved the train, and S surprising managed to tolerate the place. Then they closed it down and we started ordering food from Schwan's.
I was delighted that there was a Ruby's dinner in California. I was even more delighted when I found out that not only did they offer lettuce wrap burgers, they had an ACTUAL gluten free bun!!! Note these are buns are NOT Paleo. In truth they are not really all that great for you. They contain cain syrup, coin syrup, brown rice flour, potato starch flour, and other stuff. You can find out more about them here. I decided that I would allow them to have them as a treat.
Note: the french fries at Ruby's dinner are not guaranteed gluten free. They also have breaded fish which they fry - in a separate oil. But the fry's themselves do not have gluten. From what she said, and the fact she seemed a bit more knowledgeable about the whole gluten thing (They have gluten free items specifically on their menu - but the burgers are served with gluten free buns and tomato slices or cottage cheese) I decided we would try it. We made out good. Everyone cleared their plate was very satisfying. The buns were delicious and it was nice eating something that had the texture of bread.
Overall the meal and atmosphere was amazing. I was very impressed. I could see us eating here about twice a year. Why not more often? For one - we do not need to eat those buns more often - and we will get them next time we go back. The second reason is that it was a tad more expensive then the $20 we drop eating at In and Out.
